Change of Use, Kew College, Richmond

Education & Community

Richmond Upon Thames

Kew College is pre-preparatory and preparatory school located in Kew Gardens within the London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames. Kew College required additional accommodation to support the school. DWD was appointed to advise on the proposed change of use of a detached residential property to educational use to be used in connection with the main school building located on the same road.

The proposal also included the construction of a new single storey rear extension and an enclosed linking corridor between the property and an existing school building.

The property is located in the Kew Gardens Conservation Area and is recognised as being a Building of Townscape Merit.

DWD undertook extensive pre-application discussions with the Council and worked closely with the school to demonstrate the school’s exceptional need and to overcome concerns surrounding the heritage impact, noise outbreak and residential amenity. Planning permission was successfully secured at Planning Committee in 2015.

DWD has previously also been instructed by Kew College to advise on the increase in pupil numbers at the school. A planning application in 2011 was successful for a small increase in the school roll.
